kubespray-defaults currently does two things:
- records a number of default variable values (in particular values used
in several places)
- gather and compose some complex network facts (in particular,
`fallback_ip` and `no_proxy`
There is no actual reason to couple those two things, and it makes using
defaults more difficult (because computing the network facts is somewhat
expensive, we don't want to do it willy-nilly)
Split the two and adjust import paths as needed.
This has been deprecated for a long time, time to pull the plug.
We leave an assert for one release to have a straightforward failure if
some users were still using the variable.
The fallback_ips tasks are essentially serializing the gathering of one
fact on all the hosts, which can have dramatic performance implications
on large clusters (several minutes).
This is essentially a reversal of 35f248dff0
Being able to run without refreshing the cache facts is not worth it.
We keep fallback_ip for now, simply changing the access to a normal
hostvars variable instead of a custom dictionnary.
* Decouple role kubespray-defaults from download
Avoids doing re-importing the download role on every invocation of
kubespray-defaults (and skipping everything).
This has a measurable effect on playbook performance.
* Update docs refering to moved download defaults
When installed as an ansible collection, roles in
ansible_play_role_names will be designated by their FQDN (i.e
'kubernetes-sigs.kubespray.<role-name>).
It means we need to check for both when checking for roles in the play.
Sets ignore_unreachable: true to `Gather ansible_default_ipv4 from all hosts`
task from fallback_ips.yml
Without this scale.yml will fail if a single node in the cluster is down, which
for large clusters happens often.
* rename ansible groups to use _ instead of -
k8s-cluster -> k8s_cluster
k8s-node -> k8s_node
calico-rr -> calico_rr
no-floating -> no_floating
Note: kube-node,k8s-cluster groups in upgrade CI
need clean-up after v2.16 is tagged
* ensure old groups are mapped to the new ones
This replaces kube-master with kube_control_plane because of [1]:
The Kubernetes project is moving away from wording that is
considered offensive. A new working group WG Naming was created
to track this work, and the word "master" was declared as offensive.
A proposal was formalized for replacing the word "master" with
"control plane". This means it should be removed from source code,
documentation, and user-facing configuration from Kubernetes and
its sub-projects.
NOTE: The reason why this changes it to kube_control_plane not
kube-control-plane is for valid group names on ansible.

* Ensure kubeadm doesn't use proxy
*_proxy variables might be present in the environment (/etc/environment, bash profile, ...)
When this is the case we end up with those proxy configuration in /etc/kubernetes/manifests/kube-*.yaml manifests
We cannot unset env variables, but kubeadm is nice enough to ignore empty vars

no_proxy is a pain to get right, and having proxy variables present causes issues
(k8s components get proxy configuration after upgrade, see #7100)
It's better to only configure what require proxy:
- the runtime (containerd/docker/crio)
- the package manager + apt_key
- the download tasks
Tested with the following clusters
- 4 CentOS 8 nodes
- 1 Ubuntu 20.04 node
